UEFA Champions League Prediction Thread – 4/21/10

After yesterday’s win by Inter over Barcelona (3-1) tripped up most of the group, we come to the game that I thought would be the harder of the two to predict – Bayern Munich v. Lyon.

There’s probably a perception among some that a French team simply can’t get farther than this, although Monaco disproved that on one occasion a few years ago. When people think powerful European leagues, they think England, Spain, Italy, and Germany, and perhaps rightly so. But Lyon is here and I believe them to be a formidable opponent for Munich.

But stopping Munich is no easy task. Within the Bundesliga, which Munich leads by two points with three matches left, Bayern has had the luxury of multiple goal-scoring threats. Four Bayern players have scored at least 10 goals in the league, led by Arjen Robben’s 14. Robben has been a revelation in the Champions League, with his quality really showing up now that he seems to be more adept at staying on his feet instead of hitting the ground as the result of a soft breeze. Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez, and Ivica Olic all have 10 goals in the league, the latter also leads Bayern in Champions League goals with 4. And that’s just the attack. There’s no shortage of quality in this team, and after seeing Barcelona slip up yesterday, there’s no reason to doubt that Munich could win this whole thing.

Lyon are made up a bit differently in the attack. Lisandro Lopez leads the club with 13 league goals, and the next best scorer has just 9 (Michel Fernandes Bastos). With five matches left in the French season, Lyon are 9 points behind leaders Marseille. They are perhaps a little more dangerous here because with that gap, it may be European glory or bust. The whole key for Lyon is to survive this first leg. They don’t even have to win, and a draw would be a great result.

I fully expect Bayern to score multiple goals today. Lyon will have to at least provide some sort of answer to have a shot in the second leg when it goes back home.

I think they’ll get that, even if Bayern wins the day. 2-1 BAYERN MUNICH.

It’s 80 points for the exact result; 40 for the winner and the margin; 20 for having the winner. Hopefully some more folks get on the board today.

Here’s the season standings. Everything’s still in play:

  2. Is it too late to predict Robben scoring the only goal in the 60something minute, and I also predict two red cards…anybody wanna bet?!? I’ll even give you two-to-one odds………..
