UEFA Champions League Prediction Contest – 3/16/10

So, last week, the whole David Beckham returns to Old Trafford thing didn’t quite work out as he or AC Milan planned, and the news only got worse for Beckham – who’s international career may well be finished, and time as a player at all may be in question after he tore an Achilles tendon in a weekend Serie A match.

Tomorrow, we are presented another juicy storyline, one that may have more of an effect on the match than did the Beckham Exper … Deal. … None other than Jose Mourinho (the real life guy, not the puppet) returns to Stamford Bridge as Inter Milan face Chelsea in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie. Inter hold a 2-1 edge but Chelsea are in decent shape still, carrying an away goal.

Mourinho, of course, has to decide how to approach this match tactically, and how best to take advantage of Chelsea talent he may know better than the club’s current manager. Ordinarily, I’d see this as a tremendous advantage. But in simple terms, I have a hard time seeing Chelsea crashing out here. I expect a big effort from them, an early goal, and a convincing statement that they have moved on, and everyone else should, too. 3-1 CHELSEA.

In the other match tomorrow, Sevilla hosts CSKA Moscow. The clubs dueled to a 1-1 draw in the first leg, giving Sevilla an edge coming home. Sevilla have two wins and a draw in three home fixtures thus far in the tournament. While CSKA were enough to give them some fits at home, Sevilla can and should drop the hammer at home and move on. 3-0 SEVILLA.

It’s 20 points for the winner and exact score; 10 for having the winner and right margin; 5 for just having the winner. Points will double each round, so there’s plenty of time to make a run.

Games kick off at 3:45 p.m. Eastern Tuesday, so you’ve got an extra hour to get your picks locked in. Good luck.

  1. Chelsea 2-1 Inter
    Sevilla 2-1 CSKA

(If I’m right about the Chelsea score, I think it goes to PKs. Do I have to pick the winner? If so, I’ll take Chelsea.)

  2. RG: Nope, just the score of the game itself. How it affects who advances and such is beyond the scope of this deal.

  3. CSKA and Inter surprised many, including almost everyone in this thread, with big efforts yesterday to advance on the back of 2-1 and 1-0 victories, respectively.

The only shooter who hit the board did so in big fashion, as nica1004 nailed the CSKA victory and score for 20 points. This puts her in third place.
