UEFA Champions League Prediction Game – 2/23/10

Back for more after tomwilhelm’s 25-point effort last Wednesday got him a bit back in the race, while I continue to struggle, allowing the overall standings to tighten up a bit.

Two more Round of 16 ties begin today, and for those fans out there who only follow the Premier League (there’s good soccer elsewhere, too, you know), today probably isn’t your cup of tea. But the matches should be interesting and tough to call, which makes it good for the contest, of course.

* Olympiakos v. Bordeaux: This is a tough one for me to call because I freely admit I know little of these two squads (not that this has stopped me from picking them or picking against them before). My inclination would be then to take the home team and move on, but in a shameless effort to try and steal some points, I’m going to go the other way and take Bordeaux, 2-1.

* Stuttgart v. Barcelona: Now this one I would enjoy, if of course I was home today and able to watch it, not at work. Boo. Anyway, if these teams met 10 times on a patch of grass in Owensboro, Ky., I’d take Barcelona to win 8 or 9 of the 10. Stuttgart have been consistently frustrating this season, sporting an 8-8-7 record. Their 31 points in the Bundesliga leave them 18 off the top. They wouldn’t appear a prime suspect to knock off mighty Barcelona, the reigning European champions who once again lead La Liga and have lost just one league match all season. Looking back, you might be tempted to think their away form in the group stages was shaky, though they did grab 5 of a possible 9 points. Their only two goals in those matches, however, came in the last, a 2-1 win at Kiev. Stuttgart doesn’t seem to me to be the team that is likely to hold Barcelona out, but I’m not sold on the away deal just yet. We’ll go 1-1.

Remember, it’s now 20 points for getting the winner/score absolutely right; 10 for the winning margin, and 5 for just the winner. Still lots of time to gain ground.

Good luck!

  1. I am greek and absolutely hate Olympiakos but with all bias aside…
    Olymiakos 2-2 Bordeaux
Both teams have offensive fire power and little defense

  2. Good day for the host! … 30-point day as RegularGuy is the lone other player to put points on the board. He nailed the Bordeaux result. Nice work.
