USA v. Argentina (06/08/2008)
Powered by: CoveritLive
7:09
Aaron S. -  Hello everybody!
7:10
Aaron S. -  Here is the USA lineup:Howard; Cherundolo, Califf, Onyewu, Pearce; Dempsey, Mastroeni, Bradley, Beasley; Donovan, Johnson.

7:11
Aaron S. -  Sigh, Freddy still can't get a start.
7:12
Aaron S. -  Feel free to submit comments and questions. I'll do my best to get to them all during down periods (probably when the US has the ball)
7:14
Aaron S. -  I expect that this will be like US Soccer's match tracker, except funny... and more likely to make fun of Harkes' obnoxious voice.
7:18
Aaron S. -  My prediction: 3-1 Argentina... and really I am being kind to the US by having them scoring a goal.
7:22
Aaron S. -  This is the first time I've done anything live with the USA since I did those illegal internet Fancasts of the pre-WC 2002 friendlies. That was fun. This is similar... but legal.
7:25
Aaron S. -  Still looking for an Argentina lineup
7:26
Aaron S. -  As a random aside, how good as Andy Gray been on ESPN? He even seems to get along with Foudy... which is a surprise.
7:28
Aaron S. -  I need less of Woody Paige in my life.. especially when he discussing his bowels
7:30
Aaron S. -  I'm glad ESPN has found a few sections with USA fans in them
7:30
Aaron S. -  It's nasty hot in NJ, over 100 degrees on the field.
7:31
Aaron S. -  Again folks, please submit your comments and questions. These are a lot more fun when it's interactive. You can even take shots at me, I'll include those too.
7:32
Aaron S. -  Allen Hopkins has dropped a lot of weight. Wow.
7:33
Aaron S. -  Argentina lineup: Abbondanzieri; Heinze, G. Rodriguez, Burdisso, Zabalera; Gago, Mascherano, M. Rodriguez, Messi, Aguero; Cruz.
7:36
Aaron S. -  Players are in the tunnel, waiting to come out
7:36
Aaron S. -  Argentina is going with only 3 at back, but with Aguero and Messi slicing the center of the US defense to bits, it may not matter.
7:38
Aaron S. -  The US is in white, Argentina in the traditional stripes... they could be hard to tell apart, especially on TV.
7:41
Aaron S. -  Still waiting for the anthems.. I wonder how different this will look compared to the Euro 2008 matches I watched this weekend.
7:42
Aaron S. -  They are doing a presentation for Kasey Keller's 100th cap right now. Are we looking at the Sounders' starting GK next year?
7:44
Aaron S. -  Anthem time... Argentina's starts somber and moves into the traditional CONCACAF/CONMEBOL Opera Bouffe.
7:44
Aaron S. -  Only a recording for the US... where's Kelly Rowland?
7:44
Aaron S. -  Crowd is belting out the US anthem... good times
7:45
Aaron S. -  Okay, just a min or two here before kickoff.. first we need to let the Marines try to convince me to join.
7:47
Aaron S. -  Match has kicked off
7:48
Aaron S. -  Donovan fouls over by sideline and looks fairly aggrieved by call. Weak foul.
7:49
Aaron S. -  2 - Messi attempts to run thru entire US defense outside area, but Mastroeni dispossesses.
7:49
Aaron S. -  Forecast is for thunderstorms?!?! Apparently so.
7:50
Aaron S. -  3 - Messi is really dangerous... duh. But he just undressed Bradley twuice
7:51
Aaron S. -  4 Mascherono found space below penalty area, but cross wasn't good enough... US now gets to borrow the ball for a few seconds.
7:52
Aaron S. -  5 - Two big saves by Howard on Cruz on a lightning quick counter by Argentina. CK for Arg.
7:52
Aaron S. -  Maxi corner, bounces around by is cleared by Beasley, US looks to counter
7:54
Aaron S. -  Another counter, Maxi backheels to Cruz but his cross is cleared out by Califf
7:54
Aaron S. -  7 - CK to Argentina: they go short and Messi pass is shuffled wide by Arg
7:55
Aaron S. -  Game is fairly frantic right now. Argentina looks quite interested.
7:57
Aaron S. -  Game is very up and down right now. In this heat, this pace can't be sustained.
7:58
Aaron S. -  11 - US is putting passes together (a couple) in Argentina's half. It's certainly different from England game... Johnson needlessly meanders offside... I still don't think he belongs out there.
7:58
[Comment From Test case]
Test
7:59
Aaron S. -  Messi cross is headed back across area really dangerously but is finally cleared by US..
7:59
Aaron S. -  Argentina fans already breaking out the ole! chants and we're only in the 13th min
8:00
Aaron S. -  US attackers (and also Cherundolo) looking far more keen to take defenders on, not just pounding the ball down field.
8:01
Aaron S. -  After a godo buildup, Cherundolo crosses fairly badly and Beasley can't handle it along endline
8:01
Aaron S. -  * good buildup
8:02
Aaron S. -  Argentina called offside and Cruz gets free in the area
8:04
Aaron S. -  A foul, and some pushing and shoving breaks out with Clint in the middle of it... FK from Messi is headed just high by Heinze.
8:04
Aaron S. -  That came in the 17th min.
8:04
Aaron S. -  Dempsey hacked down in MF, FK to US, I think t was Mascherano.
8:05
Aaron S. -  About 40 yards away, and Onyewu gets knocked down before kick is taken and Burdisso is booked.
8:05
Aaron S. -  LD to take free kick but Johnson's glancing header is right into keeper's hands.
8:06
Aaron S. -  Any thoughts or comments? Let me know!
8:07
Aaron S. -  Corner here for USA, LD takes but Abbondanzieri punches strongly and rebound is then blasted high and wide by Pierce.
8:07
Aaron S. -  Another player down, this time an Argentine, Kun Aguero.. If this is called a foul, it be will a very dangerous FK.
8:08
Aaron S. -  Nope, it's just a clash of heads. No foul called. Aguero still down. He's the teenage starlet at Athletic Madrid. Scored a boatload this year in La Liga.
8:09
[Comment From the voice]
where is crespo
8:10
Aaron S. -  Crespo isn't starting. No surprise really. He's getting a bit old and I think they want to use the younger guys more like to feature in qualifying and in 2010.
8:11
Aaron S. -  Aguero nearly finds gap right in middle of US defense, but gets tackled before entering area.... US hanging on a little here.
8:12
Aaron S. -  Donovan goes for a good run down right wing, falls down and foul called on Landon
8:12
Aaron S. -  Messi is being doubled at all times now by US and yet he still just drew a corner. He is just so good.
8:13
[Comment From The Voice]
I bet you Califf and Josh Hamilton are friends...they have the same arm sleeve tattoos
8:15
Aaron S. -  Cruz is sent straight thru US defense with unbelievable pass from Messi but Howard comes out makes a big big save.
8:15 [Poll]
What will be the result tonight?
USA win

 ( 11% )

Draw

 ( 22% )

Argentina win

 ( 67% )

8:16
Aaron S. -  29 - Uh oh. Foul called against Califf just beyond the "d." This is bad. Very bad.
8:16
Aaron S. -  Five man wall, will it matter? Messi's shot is good, but too high. Whew.
8:19
Aaron S. -  Bradley passes to Dempsey, his long shot is deflected just wide.
8:19
Aaron S. -  Corner to US, Abbondanzieri catches and iimediately springs Aguero.. layoff is intercepted and cleared.
8:20
[Comment From The Voice]
sacha kljestan with the ron jeremy porn stache
8:20
Aaron S. -  Yeah, that mustache isn't pretty. I hope he lost a bet or something.
8:21
Aaron S. -  Beasley looks really good tonight...
8:22
Aaron S. -  Volley from Heath Pierce of all people forces a good save from Abbondanzieri..
8:22
Aaron S. -  US really showing signs of life here on attack. The defense still looks very very edgy.
8:22
Aaron S. -  Quick shot from distance for Cruz is saved low by Timmy
8:22
[Comment From The Voice]
jp mentioning the crew's loss to basement dwelling san jose...always good to get a shout out
8:24
Aaron S. -  Bradley and Donovan try to put together some passes at top of Arg area, but Bradley can't do anything with it.
8:26
Aaron S. -  39 - Landon goes on good run to top area and goes down. Fould should've been called but isn't. Another Argie is down hurt and game is stopped for his treatment.
8:28
Aaron S. -  Argentina attack is stymied in area when Aguero fouls Pierce chasing after pass.
8:30
Aaron S. -  Dempsey cross to Johnson is headed right at goalkeeper.... Johnson is playing better, but only by his low standards.
8:31
Aaron S. -  44 - Dempsey tries to hit Beasley with long diagonal ball on counter, but's way way long and rolls out.
8:31
[Comment From The Voice]
coax mcbride to come back to the national team
8:32
Aaron S. -  I think we'll see McBride in the Olympics for his last hurrah.
8:32
Aaron S. -  Bradley still turns the ball over too much.
8:33
Aaron S. -  45 - Cruz is thru alone again and Howard stones him again.. Howard is standing on his head... Now it's messi deep in penalty area but it's tackled away for corner.
8:34
Aaron S. -  Corner comes to nothing
8:35
Aaron S. -  HALFTIME - Howard is playing the game of his life so far. Pierce and Beasley have looked good, Bradley and Johnson haven't looked so good.
8:35
[Comment From The Voice]

[Comment From england]

8:42
Aaron S. -  Re: Tevez, it just looks like Basile is giving him a rest.
8:44
[Comment From Norway]
Hehe, actually. There has been over 25 degrees the last week. Thats kinda hot for Norway. But im guessing thats nothing compared to you. Is there any annonced subs? I really hope Howard lets Guzan play the second half! :-)

8:46
Aaron S. -  Thanks, I am glad you are enjoying the "coverage"
8:47
Aaron S. -  Still waiting for things to restart here...
8:49
Aaron S. -  So, can the US get a goal here? Can they even do from free play rather than an set piece? Lots of questions.
8:49
[Comment From Norway]
Yeah great work!Is this your job? to blog these games, or is this some personal hobby?
8:49
Aaron S. -  I am a trained journalist and a former professional sportswriter. I do other work now, but blog about soccer on the side.
8:50
Aaron S. -  Freddy Adu is limbering up...
8:50
[Comment From england]
so tell me, is Beckham winning over America? I hear he's enhanced the popularity of the sport and you've taken him to your hearts?
8:51
Aaron S. -  He has attracted more media attention to the sport... He is very likeable, though folks tend to think Posh is a skank. He has helped enormously in terms of getting higher-quality foreign talent to go to MLS as well. We won't really know until years from now, but for now, Beckham has been a good thing.
8:52
Aaron S. -  Players coming back out on field.
8:53
Aaron S. -  Howard will remain in goal...
8:54
[Comment From england]
thats good to hear. You've got it spot on, Beckham is a top man & she is a desperate cling-on! Their kids have more talent than she does!
8:54
Aaron S. -  Subs for USA: Edu is in... Bradley is out
Subs for Arg: Demichelis is in, Sosa is in. Messi is out and and someone else is out. I'll chase that down
8:54
Aaron S. -  Back underway
8:54
[Comment From Norway]
Agree with Becks. How are things going for Adu over in Benfica? There hasnt been much attention on him lately. Here in Norway anyway.
8:55
Aaron S. -  Adu has had to deal w/a coaching change and the new guy didn't play him too much. He just signed with IMG as his new agent, and is looking for a transfer I suspect.
8:56
Aaron S. -  Pierce bursts down left, cross bounces around and Landon's shot is deflected out for corner.
8:56
Aaron S. -  Pierce has been great.
8:56
Aaron S. -  Corner is headed off crossbar!
8:56
Aaron S. -   Â Ball still loose, but now cleared for another corner.
8:57
Aaron S. -  Onewyu had the header that hit the bar... another corner

Aaron S. -  This one is deflected away.
8:57
Aaron S. -  Donovan shot goes high from distance.
8:57
Aaron S. -  Pardon any spelling error, things are happening quick here.
8:58
Aaron S. -  FK here for Argentina from 40 yards but it's cleared easily
8:58
Aaron S. -  Donovan is fouled in midfield.
8:59
Aaron S. -  Johnson and Adu try some neat inter-play at right edge of area but it comes to nothing.
9:00
[Comment From england]
bet you're glad Messi is off!!
9:00
Aaron S. -  Absolutely.
9:00
Aaron S. -  Score is still 0-0
9:01
Aaron S. -  But Barely after Howard makes a big play to stop Cruz in penalty area, Argentina begs for a penalty but don't get it.
9:01
[Comment From Steve]
Who came off for Adu?
9:01
Aaron S. -  Freddy isn't on. Maurice Edu is on, and Bradley came off
9:02
Aaron S. -  Good chip in to Aguero from Gago in area, but it's mercifully offside.
9:02
Aaron S. -  Still 0-0 in 53rd minute.
9:02
Aaron S. -  Donovan low cross is cleared away...game is end-to-end.
9:03

9:09
[Comment From S.L.S.]

9:09
[Comment From Norway]
Did Argentina lose all their play with Messi going out?

9:15
Aaron S. -  66th min, still 0-0
9:16
Aaron S. -  Johnson is alone down left against Abbondazieri but his draw-back goes straight to Argentina. Now EJ is down hurt, got caught by keeper.
9:16
[Comment From Norway]
I did. Good game. Classic Germany, controlled the ball and the game. Poland had a couple of chances, but fully deserved and it could have been more.
9:16
[Comment From TheDeliverator]

Aaron S. -  Argentina has good possession at top of area, but Gago I think, over dribbles and it's cleared.
9:18
Aaron S. -  US is actually kind of controlling things here. EJ is back on.
9:19
Aaron S. -  Foul, Edu is booked and surrender FK about 30 yards from goal.
9:19
Aaron S. -  We're going to pay for allowing this many set pieces.
9:19
Aaron S. -  RED CARD - MASTROENI
9:20
Aaron S. -  I have no idea why. So is Mastro.
9:20
Aaron S. -  It's totally wrong... Mastro did nothing. He got the wrong guy.
9:21

9:23
Aaron S. -  SUB: Kljestan is in for EJ...
9:23
[Comment From S.L.S.]
a man down --- US should just aim to hang on...
9:23
Aaron S. -  so it's the 75th min, still 0-0, and now US down to 10 men.
9:23
Aaron S. -  I think ref booked the wrong guy and refused to correct the error.
9:24
Aaron S. -  Argentina now begining to clamp down... US can't clear.
9:24
[Comment From Me]
ridiculous red card
9:25
Aaron S. -  Argie FK drops in area but is cleared, US tries to counter but loses posession. Zanetti getting ready to come in.
9:25
Aaron S. -  Lewis will be next US sub
9:26
Aaron S. -  Argentina enjoying sustained possession in US half... you have to feel a goal is coming.
9:26
Aaron S. -  Ref is from El Salvador tonight. Looks in over his head.
9:26
Aaron S. -  Zanetti enters for Zamaleta..
9:26
[Comment From Kevin]
