TFC fans need to stop this now

May 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

I know am probably going to get in trouble here because I am making opinions based on something I read on MLS rumors. That’s kind of like tap dancing on a landmine. It might work for a little while, it’s going to end badly eventually and we all know it. Anyway, here it goes.

Apparantly the Toronto truthers supporters have started to cross from excess enthusiasm into outright hooliganism recently. According to MLS Rumors, which is always, sometimes, occasionally, Washington-Times-like in its reliability, TFC fans tore up some train cars. Now this could be an exaggeration, I don’t have any pics backing it up, (Update, There are pics, 8th post down) but this Red Patch Boys message board thread seems to indicate something happened.

My fear is what happens when these folks try this at some venue here in the US. The last thing MLS needs are photos of fans being truncheoned and arrested by security staffs and police departments for doing stuff worse than throwing the occasional bottle or just standing up. Ask fans across the league. This will happen.

If Toronto fans pull this crap on a Metro train, or en El train or just inside the parking lot at some of these venues, they will get heads beaten in by security or police and do this league a lot of PR harm.

Look, I know that this has happened elsewhere like in DC, NY, and LA – but I haven’t heard of those fans actually damaging and defacing trains… just each other. But the Toronto supporters’ numbers threaten to make their actions a far bigger deal than anything that’s gone on over on this side of the border.

TFC, through it’s management and players, needs to make clear that this crap is not cool and is not acceptable. Toronto needs to stamp this out right now before some of these people seriously embarrass the sport here.
